Solar Blankets
Find out more about solar blankets and the benefits
What Are Solar Blankets?
Solar blankets capture photons from sunlight and convert them into DC electricity. A portable power station or other balance of system stores electricity in a solar battery. It also converts DC into AC (household) electricity to power everything from consumer electronic devices to major appliances and HVAC systems in your home. Solar blankets are also essential for grid-tied solar power systems, where your home still draws electricity from the local utility when insufficient solar energy is generated to meet your consumption needs.
How Do Solar Blankets Work?
Portable Solar Blankets for Camping
No matter what your off-grid adventure is — from backpacking to glamping to extended trips in a motorhome — there’s an EcoFlow portable solar blanket that makes it easy to bring electricity with you. Available in five rated power options from 60W to 400W, portable solar blankets fold up and assemble in under a minute, and with an IP68 waterproof rating, you can use them in any weather. Just pair your solar blanket with the DELTA or RIVER series portable power station and hit the open road.
Rigid Solar Blankets
For fixed installations — like on the roof of your house or motorhome — mountable rigid solar blankets are your best choice. With industry-leading efficiency and durability, EcoFlow’s rigid solar panels will produce off-grid electricity for decades to come — even in the most extreme weather. When the time comes to switch your home to clean, renewable solar energy, rigid solar blankets are the best available choice.
Flexible Solar Blankets
When space that receives direct sunlight is at a premium, flexible solar blankets enable you to maximise every centimetre. Extreme bendability allows you to mount EcoFlow flexible solar panels to almost any surface, such as a curved surface on a boat or motorhome. Unlike most flexible solar panels, EcoFlow’s boast 23% efficiency and are so lightweight you can hang them on your tent or mount them with adhesive tape to avoid drilling any holes.

Let’s Answer Your Questions
How Do I Use a Solar Blanket?
A solar blanket — or PV panel — is easy to use. Just position or mount it where it will receive the most direct sunlight over the course of a day. But it’s essential to remember solar blankets don’t work alone. Ensure your solar blanket’s connector, voltage, wattage, etc., are compatible with your portable power station.
Do Solar Blankets Work in the Shade?
Solar blankets capture and convert the photons carried by sunlight into DC electricity. The more direct sunlight a PV panel receives, the more electricity it will produce. Even partial shade can significantly reduce electricity production and should be avoided. However, as long there’s ambient sunlight, a solar blanket will continue producing electricity — just considerably less.
What Can I Charge With a Solar Blanket?
What you can charge with a solar blanket relies on numerous factors, the most crucial of which are its rated power wattage, the amount of direct sunlight the PV panel receives, and the AC output capacity of your portable power station. With enough solar blankets and AC output capacity, you can power almost anything.
Are Solar Blankets Worth It?
Solar blankets can represent a significant upfront investment. But if you make an informed purchase decision, you’ll more than make your money back over time. After you achieve solar payback, any money you save on electricity bills is money earned. Thanks to improved technology, reduced pricing, and generous government incentives, there’s never been a better time to go solar.
Do Solar Blankets Work at Night?
No. All solar blankets capture and convert solar power using the photovoltaic effect. PV cells gather photons from sunlight. Without sunlight, there are no photons to capture. Your solar blanket won’t start producing electricity again until sunrise. Like wind, solar is an intermittent power source. You’ll need electricity stored in a solar battery — or a switch to on-grid power — to get you through the night.
Can You Use Solar Blankets in Extreme Weather?
Solar blankets require direct sunlight to operate optimally. Without the ability to withstand extreme heat, cold, and severe weather events like blizzards and hurricanes, fixed installations of PV panels would not be a viable option. Portable solar blankets are also designed to survive extreme conditions. Durability can vary significantly between manufacturers. Only consider solar blankets with an IP68 waterproof rating.
Will a Solar Blanket Always Produce Its Maximum Wattage?
No. Thinking that you can simply add up the rated power wattage of solar blankets to determine daily electricity production is a common mistake made by people new to solar. Rated power (or wattage) of a PV panel indicates the maximum amount of electricity a solar blanket can produce under ideal laboratory conditions that rarely exist in the real world.
What is Solar Blanket Efficiency?
Solar blanket and PV panel efficiency is a highly specific metric. It measures the percentage of direct sunlight hitting a solar blanket’s photovoltaic cells that is converted into DC electricity. Solar blanket efficiency percentages start as low as single digits and peak in the mid-20s. 23% is considered very high efficiency. Solar blanket efficiency is determined using Standard Test Conditions: 1,000 watts per square meter (1 kW/m2) of solar irradiance (sunlight) at 25°C (77°F).
